Smart Women/Foolish Choices: Finding the Right Men Avoiding the Wrong Ones (Signet) Review

Smart Women/Foolish Choices: Finding the Right Men Avoiding the Wrong Ones (Signet)

This is a valuable book on how to gage erroneous, futile mechanisms and thought processes that keep women in hopeless mindsets and equally hopeless relationships. These two licensed professional counselors are men themselves, and their experience and professional knowledge bring much enlightenment to the mystery of men's behavior in relationships. I highly recommend this book to those who have been led to falsely believe that all men are commitment-phobic slugs and want validation to seek emotionally mature men that embrace confident, mature women for what they bring to the union. It offers tips on how ladies can come into their own power and to take assured chances with the opposite sex. Very concise, easy to read and well-written.

Racing Towards Excellence Review

Racing Towards Excellence

What will YOU get from this book? That depends entirely on your background and what you already know, but I expect
- Most people will wonder "why did nobody tell me this before?"
- For the remaining minority, I am certain it will still provide some potentially life-improving lessons for you, if you give the book a serious try.
As said above, some people will find the first half of the book, `Book One', a bit dry and technical. Certain economic terminology is used from time to time, too - opportunity cost, utility curves, ceteris paribus and a few others - if you aren't familiar with these, you may have to head to Wikipedia a few times.
But see this as an investment which will soon provide a good return. It forms a very logical and functional system vital to understanding Book Two, where I suspect most people will derive the most tangible value.
Exactly what you gain from Book Two depends entirely on your circumstances, but it covers such a breadth of information that you will simply have to come across ideas, concepts, perspectives and advice that are ground breaking to you. Personally, Book Two was an education I somehow missed or forgot along the way (I have detailed my own experience at the end of this review).
I'll summarise it like so:
***Racing Towards Excellence is quite simply littered with invaluable insight, across a breadth of subjects covering virtually all aspects of life.*** Overall, as a potentially life-changing book, I cannot recommend this enough: And that is why I am insisting that my close friends and family read this too. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I personally gained from the book:
Perhaps most exciting for me has been Thinking Outside The Box (chapter 16), which turns a concept I saw as inevitably elusive into a relatively solid and even controllable tool. It provides astonishingly practical advice for improving your ability to think outside of popular boundaries, and explains the value and process of forming such ideas in a way I think all teachers I've ever had have neglected to explain.
Jan Sramek's section on Study Skills is, as you will no doubt agree, extremely thought-provoking. I see his methods as something to adopt particularly cautiously, but is once again an exciting prospect and could potentially yield huge rewards. As a 'hard working student' (I had never heard that phrase carry a negative connotation before), I simply wish this had been available to me many years ago.
While those are two chapters that stand out as particularly noteworthy, there are simply countless more pieces of invaluable information here... On all topics, I have taken away a little snippet of potentially life-changing information.
Plenty of others have reiterated the author's advice: this is not magical, you do actually need considerable effort to implement and benefit from all this advice. But actually, some of the things I've learned are already paying off. I have an infinitely better understanding of the human brain, how it works and how to exploit this (in memory retention, and using repetition to `tell our brain something is important', for example). I am blown away at the authors' insight into our 3 modern `key skills' - reading, touch-typing and memorization - and I am now rapidly increasing my reading speed and comprehension, which is rightly described as "the ultimate low-hanging fruit".
In fact, I've actually come out feeling like a bit of an efficiency freak, always trying give myself more time in life - something which I've always known should be the case, but which I previously never really adopted myself (see section 6.5 for more on this). I think that, having read the results of the authors' own time-saving behaviour, I've definitely been inspired: And I expect many others will be similarly inspired, too.
It'd be interesting to read what the authors have to say in another 10 years, and another 10 after that.

The life of young people around the world has become more complicated in the past two decades. The pressure is on; expectations are increasing and the race for children to outperform and succeed in life starts earlier than ever before. Unfortunately, the teaching of life skills required to succeed in this new competitive landscape has in general not kept up with these developments. The outcome is inevitable. High expectations, both of the individuals and those around them, collide with a lack of relevant preparation and result in unhappiness. It is the universities and corporations across the world that later face the consequences of these problems. Too often, students and recent graduates are either relaxed and 'happy', or successful, but rarely both. Numerous cases of burn-outs on the one hand and drop-outs on the other illustrate the problem. It is unfortunate, albeit perfectly understandable, that only a small proportion of students and graduates succeed in finding the elusive 'work-life' balance, and outperform in a way that leads to happiness. Why? Nobody has ever taught the majority of them how to do it.At last, finally here comes a book for a generation that is often almost as confused as it is ambitious. Racing Towards Excellence fills the gap; it explains how and when outperformance happens, how it leads to happiness and how to practically achieve both. Its principles are surprisingly universal and applicable to any field or activity, e.g. academia, business, entrepreneurship, finance, sports, arts etc.Amongst the thousands of self-help books, this book stands out with its refreshing attitude, well executed combination of theory and practice, and the unique background of the authors. Covering areas ranging from inspiration, vision, love and responsibility to habits, study skills, health and fitness, communication, networking, mentoring and productive leisure, Racing Towards Excellence is a must-read for all ambitious students and recent graduates.

Don't Eat The Marshmallow Yet: The Secret to Sweet Success in Work and Life Review

Don't Eat The Marshmallow Yet: The Secret to Sweet Success in Work and Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd like to preface my review of this book by stating unequivocally that I am not, nor will I ever be a person who seeks intellectual or spiritual solace in the pages of a book. In fact, I've always scoffed cynically at the poor lost sheep who spend hundreds of dollars in the hopes that one of those "Tony Robbins types" will lead them to the promised land. It was with this skepticism that I began to read the pages of a book that will affect every aspect of my life for as long as I live.
My girlfriend recommended "Marshmallow" to me some time ago. Because she is a woman whom I love and admire, I felt compelled to read this book that she credits so much for her strength and success. Eventually, as most men in love do, I did as I was told; I read the book.
Then I read it again. And then again. Dr. De Posada somehow wrote my biography without ever having have met me. He knew exactly which poor decisions I was making in my life, and eerily, he knew the thought process behind those decisions. In a simple, concise, easy to read jewel, Dr. De Posada can teach anyone how to save money, rear children, or even lose weight just by applying one principle to all of their decisions, "don't eat the marshmallow...yet!" If you can delay the immediate gratification, the "quick fix," you will be a happier and more successful person in life. Why eat 10 Bic Macs a month when you can have one filet mignon for the same amount of money and a lot less fat? Why buy the Rolex today when, if properly invested, you could use the money to retire tomorrow and own 10 Rolexes if you wished.
As a young attorney I found my self spending my new-found riches on things that simply will not last. All I had left of the money I would spend were faint memories and hang-overs. I was so anxious to immediately enjoy the fruits of my labor, that I failed to realize those fruits had not yet rippened.
Since reading this book I have made giant strides in becoming a "marshmallow resister." The results can be measured by the resurgence of my once waning my bank account. This doesn't mean that I have become a frugal, anti-social leper. Quite the opposite, the quality of my life has improved. Rather than drinking at the local bar 3 days a week, I go once a week and find that I enjoy it even more. This is what the book makes you realize, that more often than not, less is more. And that if you apply patience and discipline to your life instead of pleasing yourself every chance you get, you will be paid off in the long-run.

Arthur is a chauffeur who is intellectually gifted. Jonathan is no less bright than Arthur, equally hard-working, and a billionaire. So why is Jonathan in the back seat of the limousine and Arthur in the front? What explains the difference between success and failure? And what does it mean to you and your children? Joachim de Posada, a world-renowned motivational speaker, found the answer in a landmark Stanford University study of children who were able to delay gratification-in the form of a marshmallow they'd been given to eat-with the promise that they'd be rewarded with an additional marshmallow if they resisted eating the first for fifteen minutes. Ten years later, the children who held out had grown up to be significantly more successful than those who had eaten their marshmallow immediately. Posada saw that the key difference between success and failure is not merely hard work or superior intelligence, but the ability to delay gratification. "Marshmallow resisters" achieve high levels of success while others eat all their marshmallows at once, so to speak-accumulating debt and dissatisfaction despite their occupations or incomes. But it doesn't have to be that way. Using a simple parable and real-life examples (including basketball great Larry Bird and major league baseball catcher Jorge Posada, Joachim's cousin), this life-changing book shows readers how the moves made today can pay off big tomorrow-if they just don't eat the marshmallow...yet!

You Can't Judge a book by it's cover!!! "The Problem with women...is Men" by Charles Orlando is not a male bashing kind of book. It's for BOTH sexes!! This book is a great read...explains how a relationship works both ways and how it takes effort from both parties to make a relationship grow. I really enjoyed the Appendix: The Evolved Man's Gratuity guide....I feel that a majority of men and women tend to short change food servers, cocktail servers, & ect.Anywho,I would suggest everyone to read this book...its a quick, witty, and enjoyable read! Way to Go Charles!

Relationships. Marriage. How do they work, and why don't they last? Flip on the TV or peruse the self-help section at any local bookstore and you see the same theme over and over again: Women need to alter their behavior, and should work harder at understanding men. But nothing could be further from the truth. Women in committed relationships are not to blame for men's bad behavior, or 100% responsible for failed relationships. Based on author Charles Orlando's past experience as a "morally challenged" young man, and hundreds of interviews with men and women, The Problem with Women... is Men: The Evolution of a Man's Man to a Man of Higher Consciousness takes readers on a humorous, blunt, tell-all romp through the world of men and their issues. Women can regain their sanity, men can evolve beyond their primal instincts, and perhaps society will start to raise the bar on what the term "man" means.

The Aladdin Factor Review

The Aladdin Factor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Somebody stop me! I am in the midst of further changing my life for the better and found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in the book The Aladdin Factor by the New York Times bestselling authors of Chicken Soup for the Soul - Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. Life is great people and we each have a specific task to fulfill during our lifetime! If you need a jump-start in awaking, finding or rededicating yourself to your purpose in life then this is the book and a great tool to utilize!
Be forewarned, you will need to read this book several times in order to absorb all the wonderful, practical, and life altering information presented within it's pages! Who knows, maybe you'll follow suit and find a partner to work with you through the book the second time you read it. A friend of mine and I have each read the book and plan on starting our New Year off right by doing the exercises and sharing our self-discoveries with each other - chapter by chapter week by week. If you are serious about applying the information in this book, YOU will not be sorry! However, this book is so rich and so informative that if you read it at least once, you will see changes in your life if you apply the material AND you will learn how to ask for and receive the things that life holds for you!
Now on to the content of the book, throughout the first two sections of the book the authors creatively include their wisdom and the lessons they wish to bestow upon the reader hidden in the story of Aladdin and the magic lamp with the genie. This approach is both entertaining and enlightening, and keeps the reader's attention focused on the overall theme of the story, but also leaves the reader subconsciously taking mental notes of the information presented for personal use once the book has been completed.
The most unique and fundamental information is presented prior to the start of the story. Chapter One is entitled "The Five Barriers To Asking: The Main Reasons We Don't Ask for What We Want". How about that? They are going to dispel any preconceived notions that you and I have AND they are going to lay it on the line by telling us why we don't ask and therefore don't receive. By this point in the book the reader can sense serious life changing information is being presented, which is a great sign since it is only the beginning of the book!
According to the authors, the five reasons why we don't ask for what we want are:
(1)Ignorance - we don't know what to ask for, we don't know what is available and possible, we don't know what we really need/want, and we don't know how to ask.
(2)Limiting and Inaccurate Beliefs - we are programmed by our parents, schools, major media, religious training, etc. One of the greatest examples used that has stuck in my mind ever since I read the book was the following - Many people who are in relationships fall into this trap - "If you really loved me, I wouldn't have to ask". If you think about it, that statement is just plain silly! We are all human and we cannot read minds. I've used this one myself on many occasions and Canfield and Hansen made me stop and really think about what I was expecting from others in my life. If I cannot read their minds, how can I realistically expect them to read mine? Do you know how much heartache and hurt feelings we could completely avoid if we would learn that this notion is not true? We all need to learn how to develop our communication skills more and this book is a great place to start!
(3)Fear - fear of rejection, fear of looking stupid, fear of being powerless, fear of humiliation, and fear of abandonment.
(4)Low Self-Esteem - feeling of unworthiness and the feeling of "my needs" are not important.
(5)Pride - afraid to appear weak and needy, fear of other's judgment, and the notion that we are supposed to be able to figure things out for ourselves.
After the authors lead the reader through Aladdin's journey and lessons learned, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen tie up the book nicely with the third part entitled "How to Ask, Who to Ask and What to Ask for". Not only do they tell you how to ask, they tell you how to ask at home, how to ask at school, how to ask at work, how to ask the world, how to ask yourself and how to ask a Higher Power.
The authors also skillfully teach you how to give of yourself, how to strengthen your relationships (in all areas of your life), how to turn rejection into acceptance, how to be diplomatic, how to be a person of excellent character, how to persevere - and that is only naming a few! I couldn't possibly list all the things you will learn from these fine authors, or else I would end up rewriting their book word for word!
If you have read any of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which I am guessing about 99.9% of you have, you will find the same content and style that has made Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen both famous and bestsellers. They include stories of the lives, trials, successes, and lessons learned by many different people. They also include their well-known and awe-inspiring quotes as found in their Chicken Soup series, which drive the lessons home effectively! I just love their use of quotes.
The Aladdin Factor by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen is a "must have" in the personal home library of any individual who seeks to become a well rounded and a successful person in all areas of their life. Happy Reading!

The Class We Never Had
Isn't it a bit odd that we went from Science to Math to History but somehow missed the class on how to live? For some wacky reason "Optimal Living 101" didn't make the schedule... But imagine if that class did exist and the teachers included everyone from the old school philosophers like Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, Emerson, Nietzsche and Buddha to modern sages like Joseph Campbell, Paulo Coelho, Dan Millman, Deepak Chopra, Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle and Wayne Dyer plus the world's leading positive psychologists like Sonja Lyubomirsky, Tal Ben-Shahar and Martin Seligman who are *scientifically* establishing how we can live with more happiness, meaning and mojo.

Think of this book as a Philosopher's notes on that awesome class. From "Spiritual Farts" and "110-Year Old You"s to "The Tolle Trap" and "Blissipline," you'll have fun getting your wisdom on in this inspiring, playful, wise and practical little book as Brian Johnson shares one hundred of his favorite Big Ideas on how to create a life brimming with a radiant enthusiasm only discovered when we align with the fundamentals of Optimal Living.

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation Review

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm writing this review in response to the accusations by Dr. Rita in a previous review. She says that Ms. Howell is trying to brainwash us into buying her
CDs and is using subliminal messages in The Secret Universal Mind Meditation to achieve that end. Dr. Rita "used fast-forward" and supposedly heard certain titles mentioned and a command to send money. Well, I've just listened to the CD in it's entirety (without fast-forwarding) and found nothing of the sort. I don't know who you are, Dr. Rita, but I question the validity of your findings.
My conclusion after listening is that the CD has the potential to be very powerful if you accept its message. Lots of people have a problem with the idea that they are, essentialy, God. If that is the case you will find the messages on this CD very disturbing, even blasphemous. But there is a growing number of people, myself among them who, for whatever reasons, are beginning to expand their concept of God and starting to realize their Oneness with Infinite Intelligence and their ability to co-create with the Divine. For us the meditation contained on this CD can have a truly amazing and powerful effect.
Clinical hypnotherapists will tell you that most people, when listening to a hypnosis CD, need around 3-4 months for the suggestions to become internalized. I highly suggest using this time frame instead of the 6 weeks suggested by Howell. Because of the potency of the messages contained in the meditation it would be a shame for anyone to discontinue listening if they failed to get results after 6 weeks. Give it at least 3 months.
The only reason I'm giving three stars is that I haven't seen any real results concerning my thought processes or belief structure. Granted, it's only been around a month. But when I achieve the results I'm expecting I hope to give it 5 stars.
In the words of Jesus Christ Himself, "Is it not written that ye are Gods?"

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation imparts the sacred truth spiritual masters have taught for centuries. This truth is real and powerful. It starts by changing your belief system, slowly, subtly and gently while you sleep. As you are lulled into blissful slumber, secret messages are whispered into your ears--first audibly, and then just below the level of consciousness. Over days and weeks to come, your conscious and your subconscious mind will accept the secret as true. Without knowing how or why, everything you need and desire will come to you through communing with the Universal Mind. With this program you will overcome limiting, outmoded beliefs that have hindered your ability to create the life you've always wanted. While theta and delta waves gently lull you to sleep, your mind is re-programed with new knowledge and beliefs that unleash your power to create a new reality; a reality that fulfills your deepest needs and desires. Through nightly listening, your subconscious will accept the information it receives as true. When this happens, what you need and desire comes to you. And there is nothing you need to do except relax and listen. If you fall asleep while listening, that's even better; the messages are still absorbed into your subconscious. The results are profound.

Pulling Your Own Strings: Dynamic Techniques for Dealing with Other People and Living Your Life as You Choose

I read this book 22 years ago, when I was an 18 year old heading off to college. The book provided me with ways to be assertive and achieve my goals without allowing others to walk all over me.
Now, I am the mother of three teenagers and am reading this book again with my 14 year old daughter, in an effort to help her through a difficult time dealing with an authority figure (who is manipulative and abusing her power.)
I am simply amazed at how much of the information in the book has worked its way into my core beliefs over the years...from handling difficult people and situations to teaching my kids how to handle bullies. As we were reading the introduction, my daughter said, "Mom, I don't need to read this." When I asked her why, she commented "you've been teaching it to me all my life!"
Young adults, I highly recommend that each and every one of you read this book. Learn to stand up for yourself and be respected for doing so. Parents, you'll want to read it too!

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer reveals how we all can prevent ourselves from being victimised by others and begin to operate from a position of power at the centre of our own lives. Asserting that we alone are responsible for how much we will be controlled by others, Dyer offers his practical plan for developing new attitudes toward the most common sources of victimisation and manipulation, such as family members and authority figures in the workplace. For example, families can be tremendously coercive and demanding, but they can also be an immensely rewarding part of your life. Dyer shows how to cope with the negative side and contribute to the positive. Also, in their working life many people stay in unfulfilling jobs because they feel constrained by their present experience or because they fear change. Dyer shows that by being enthusiastic and flexible, you can find the work that makes you happy. In this modern–day classic, Dyer shows you how to stop being the victim in all aspects of everyday life and to take charge of your destiny.

Arrest-Proof Yourself: An Ex-Cop Reveals How Easy It Is for Anyone to Get Arrested, How Even a Single Arrest Could Ruin Your Life, and What to Do If the Police Get in Your Face

I almost cannot believe this book was written by a cop. If Hunter S. Thompson were not dead before the publication date, I would swear this was ghost-written. When he advises the reader to consider SOILING his or her PANTS to avoid being taken into custody, I can't vouch for the quality of the advice, but I have to admire the author's balls. Other bits of advice are undoubtably real gems; when the author recommends to always ask the cop for a Notice to Appear in court (or "NOA" - this is to be attempted before resorting to the pant-pooping) he is dispensing uncommon practical wisdom. His discussion of racial profiling, and direct advice to young black and hispanic men, is jaw-droppingly frank. Not unlike Thucydides, the author says, in effect: "Let us have no talk of just and unjust."
The bulk of this book is not unlike the various "Know Your Rights" resources published by groups like the ACLU, but it is vastly better. Those other resources give sound advice in the form of "rules," but it is abstracted from 4th and 5th Amendment case law. The truth is that the justice system exists primarily in the cracks between the laws - in the form of police and prosecutorial discretion. The subjective aspects of an encounter with the police - namely police incentives and psychology - are at least as important to your outcome as the positive law is. Any student of the Supreme Court can tell you what to do in a police encounter (e.g. "shut up"), but without any understanding of why you are doing it, it may be VERY difficult advice to follow.
Following the old adage "know your enemy in order to defeat him," the author shows you what a police encounter looks like from the cop's perspective. Police, the author emphasizes, are NOT "just people" - they are "Great White sharks" (his words) trained to churn as many arrests and seizures as possible. But -like sharks- they share certain natural tendencies that make them predictable, (to a limited extent) manipulable, and (above all) avoidable.
Another way it differs from the ACLU brand of rights books and videos is in its urgency. The author argues that, in the electronic panopticon that is today's justice system, an arrest is effectively as damning as a conviction. Computer databases mean that today, not just your penal interests, but also your future employment and your credit can be ruined by an arrest. This is why you - the citizen - must read this book. Not even the best attorney can get you "un-arrested" - you must help yourself by staying free in the first place.
That said, I think the author overstates this point a bit. The class of the offense and your age at the time still matter a great deal. Not even the CIA can afford to exclude everyone with a blemish on their record. Moreover, the panopticon is not really all that efficient (yet). If your name is "Joe Smith," from "Los Angeles," your legibility to the system is still pretty minimal.
Carson limits his advice to those bits helpful to the "clueless" petty criminal - the people most likely to be arrested in a random police encounter. This book tells you only how to navigate what the law calls a "Terry" stop. He's not interested in helping dangerous and/or professional criminals - who are in any event much more likely to be arrested pursuant to a warrant of some sort. (If your house is going to be raided, get a book on prisons, because this won't be of much help.)
This brings us to the author's very interesting editorial thesis: namely, that economics keeps petty offenses criminal. On this account, simple possession of marijuana remains a criminal offense primarily because courts and cops need something to do while they are between rapists and murderers. Petty crime is the daily bread of the justice system. This is a very interesting hypothesis, and while it probably deserves a more scholarly treatment than it recieves here (any U of Chicago grad students in the room?), it seems to me intuitively correct. This beast must eat a steady diet of petty offenders so that it's still in shape when we really need it. But this obviously sucks for the petty offenders (who, when you think about it, are really doing a public service) and Carson is interested in teaching them how to avoid the beast's jaws.
Sadly, the few people who really need this book are unlikely to have the foresight to read it. But, if you are at risk of being arrested this book is for you. If you look weird, are a young male, belong to a racial minority group, travel on foot, drive after midnight, use illegal drugs, have a prior record, or have friends or family who do any of the above, this book is worth taking a look at. Also highly recommended for people who work in the CJ system (except cops, who know this stuff).

Rarely does a book come along that gets labled "companion", but Thick Face Black Heart is just that. Like Gracian's "The Art of Wordly Wisdon", this book is a companion for life. To be read and re-read.
I searched and read for a long time differing books on succeeding in life. I bought this book based on a comment from a reviewer inside which said, "If I had to carry only two books on a runway it would be Sun Tzu's Art of War and Thick Face Black Heart."
Being a huge long time fan of SunTzu, I figured I had to give this book a chance. It was one of the best decisions I have made.
The clarity into how life works whether you like it or not is worth the cost alone. Too many people (myself included) have a hard time believing that the world (and life) itself is a battlefield. This illumination will not depress you - in fact it will rejuvinate you.
My copy is dog-eared to no end. I read it through at least twice a year and keep it by my bed (whether at home or on the road).
This is not money wasted.
The best compliment I can give about this book? After having read Thick Face Black Heart the first time, I threw all other self-help books I owned (Tony Robbins included)in the trash. I haven't missed them since.

This is one of my all-time favorite books, and one of my favorite books to recommend to people. Pearson explains the Hero and the Heroic Archetypes (Warrior, Wanderer, etc.) in a clear and down-to-earth way. This is the easiest, most straightfoward, introduction I have found to Jungian and archetypal psychology. It presents powerful life-altering ideas in a readily accessible format. This book is an excellent introduction to Jungian thought. It is excellent for anyone who feels "stuck" in life. It is wonderful for people who want to understand themselves and others more deeply, especially with regard to developing higher possibilities. It is a book which helps you discover, and encourages you to pursue, what is most admirable within you.

If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him The Pilgrimage of Psychotherapy Patients Review

If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him The Pilgrimage of Psychotherapy Patients

This book is a wonderful read for anyone who wonders, worries or agonizes about the meaning of life, and whether they're doing it "right." Psychotherapist Kopp wrote this book in 1972, but it still works today.
Whether giving or receiving therapy, this book reminds us that we are all humans -- nobody has all the answers. The eschatological laundry list (which I've seen roaming around the web, but never attributed to Kopp) has become a classic.
1. This is it! 2. There are no hidden meanings
3. You can't get there from here, and besides, there's no place else to go
4. We are all already dying and we'll be dead for a long time.
5. Nothing lasts!
6. There is no way of getting all you want.
7. You can't have anything unless you let go of it.
8. You only get to keep what you give away.
9. There is no particular reason why you lost out on some things.
10. The world is not necessarily just. Being good often does not pay off and there is no compensation for misfortune.
11. You have the responsibility to do your best nonetheless.
12. It is a random universe to which we bring meaning.
13. You don't really control anything.
14. You can't make someone love you.
I'll stop there -- there's more in the book, and if you find the list discouraging, you need to read the book. If you find the words encouraging, you need to read the book. Add it to your list of books to give friends who are feeling glum and hopeless.
Use it as a group discussion book!
After reading this (at different stages in my life), I still find it centering and soothing. A good addition to the self-help library, along with The Road Less Traveled.

The Gabriel Method: The Revolutionary DIET-FREE Way to Totally Transform Your Body Review

The Gabriel Method: The Revolutionary DIET-FREE Way to Totally Transform Your Body
Average Reviews:

I have a graduate degree in nutrition and extensive knowledge of nondiet approaches, including Shapedown, Intuitive Eating, and Eating Competence. That said, I believe we all have our own inner wisdom and should follow what works for our own, unique bodies. So this review is my own personal view. It doesn't mean I bow to the USDA or don't have a critical thought in my head, it's just my review of the book (which I liked).
THE BABY: Gabriel's book has some wonderful qualities, including the visualizations, which I find to be a missing link in many nondiet approaches to weight management. He also gets the reader to "add in" healthy foods rather than "restricting out" foods that they see as "forbidden." This is something I've always preached and agree with wholeheartedly. His take on the dynamics of dieting and emotional starvation are spot on.
THE BATHWATER: Although he has "notes" and citations at the end of each chapter, don't get caught up in some of the nutritional assertions he makes. Pasteurizing milk does not "denature" the calcium in it. Calcium cannot be denatured... it's a mineral, not a protein. The calcium in any milk is just fine. Eating foods in a specific order is also unfounded. He says that meat requires an acidic environment, where milk and starch require alkaline ones... well yes, no, and it doesn't matter. Protein (from both the meat and milk) is digested first in the acidic environment of the stomach, and then in the alkaline environment of the small intestine (the pancreas shoots in bicarbonate to neutralize the stomach acid). Sugars and starches are primarily digested in the small intestine. The key: your stomach is like a blender, and all the nutrients are in one big glob. You have mroe enzymes than you can shake a stick at, and they only recongize the nutrient they're trying to break down, be it protein, carbohydrate, or fat. There is no reason to eat foods in a particular order or at separate meals.
He also asserts the aspartame causes an insulin response. This is based on a small study (that he doesn't cite, but it's the only one I could find) from 1988 on a handful of type 2 diabetic patients. The insulin peak was no different than with the unsweetened product, and the area under the curve was slighly greater.
I could go on (and on, because he really does make some outlandish nutritino claims) but you get the idea. He makes some mistakes, as so many authors do, by not consulting with experts in areas with which he's not familiar enough. He relies on "it sounds good, and makes sense."
NOT THROWING THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATHWATER: There is so much about this book that is excellent, just not the nutrition information (other than eating whole, healthy, unprocessed foods). I suspect Jon Gabriel will correct some of his errors in subsequent editions of the book. I hope the next edition will be even more grounded in science, as there is a LOT in this book that is uncited. It's a red flag for me, as the citations he does give are often news articles or simply "notes" that are his opinions. I'm concerned that some readers might see the smattering of citations and swallow the whole shebang without a critical eye.
THE BOTTOM LINE: A good read for those struggling with weight issues, although there are other similar books grounded in science. Simply take the nutrition information with a grain of salt. No pun intended.

The pile of recent dieting books is growing faster than the average American's waistline. From the well-known programs that deprive and restrict to ones that rely on juice alone, it seems that everybody has an answer to the growing problem of obesity. When Jon Gabriel's life took an unexpected turn, he suddenly was awakened to the marvelous gift that he had been given -- the opportunity to live -- and was disgusted at how he had treated his body. At over four hundred pounds, walking, sleeping, and working was a struggle against gravity, and his life was a constant battle between emotional and physical satiation. He was slowly killing himself with food. Like the estimated 58 percent of Americans, and rising numbers in other countries, Jon was trapped in what he came to call the FAT - Famine and Temperature - trap. By studying biochemistry, Gabriel learned that your body has an internal logic that determines how fat or thin you will be at any given time. The way to lose weight is not to struggle or to force yourself to lose weight but to understand this internal logic and work with it so that your body wants to be thinner. When your body wants to be thinner, weight loss is inevitable and becomes automatic and effortless. You simply crave less food, you crave healthier foods, your metabolism speeds up and you become very efficient at burning fat, just like a naturally thin person. And that's the real transformation -- to transform yourself into a naturally thin person, so that you can eat whatever you want whenever you want and still be thin, fit, and vibrantly healthy. After reading The Gabriel Method, you will learn:
Your body has a reason why it's holding on to weight--and it's not your fault.
Fat is a cushion--a protective barrier that our mind believes is helping to protect us.
If you can change that belief, you can change your body; Stop the cycle of crash dieting and start eating what you want, when you want it.
How to choose healthy, nutritious foods that nourish the cells in your body, not starve them.
Delicious shakes and smoothies, and super-power supplements, that can jump start your success.
The simple way you can train your mind and body to work with your goal of health, not against it.
Eliminate the emotional and mental reasons your body holds on to weight in just 10 minutes a day. It certainly worked for Jon; he lost 225 pounds in two-and-a-half years, going from 409 pounds to 184, without suffering, dieting, or anguishing over his body. Unlike most people who lose an extensive amount of weight, his skin tightened up and now is indistinguishable from that of a person who has been healthy his whole life.

The Sedona Method: Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace and Emotional Well-Being Review

The Sedona Method: Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace and Emotional Well-Being
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I have read dozens of self-help books and attended weeks of self-help seminars, none of those books and seminars helped me in the profound way that The Sedona Method has.
The book's core observation is that we allow emotions based on old memories to block our minds and bodies from experiencing what is possible now. Many self-help authors make the same point.
What makes The Sedona Method different from the others is the proposed method for eliminating those emotions. I have learned many other techniques for changing memories (such as the Tony Robbins Swish pattern) and use meditation to withdraw from emotions. I have found that meditation has worked best for me in the past. While meditating, my head is pleasantly vibrating and I feel at mental peace. With The Sedona Method teachings, I find that my whole body shudders pleasantly into relaxation and peace. In other words, this process causes me to enjoy a greater release from old memories and emotions than I had thought possible. It's a wonderful gift.
So what do you have to do to enjoy this peace? You just need to ask yourself a series of questions (and the book is full of exercises to help you do that). I soon found that I did not need to ask all of the questions. With practice, I could just release negative emotions whenever I wanted to.
This book came to me at a very stressful time . . . just after my Father died. I find that the grieving process has been greatly eased by the emotional releases I can stimulate any time I want.
To get the most benefit from this book, you should practice every day to establish new habits. I read the book over two weeks to help make that transition. In retrospect, I would have done better to have read it over more weeks and practiced more each day. I plan to reread the book now to deepen my benefit.
What was most impressive to me was that I could get so much benefit without going to a class or listening to an audio version. I suspect the teachings would be much more powerful in those forms. But you certainly can experience great things from just reading the book, doing the exercises, practicing and remembering to use the teachings when those emotions well up.
May your days be filled with tranquility and a greater sense of what is possible!

Foreword by Jack Canfield: I have been hearing wonderful things about the Sedona Method from clients and friends for about 20 years. Recently, I finally took the course with my wife and my 12-year-old son. I've been amazed at the simplicity of the Method and the powerful impact it has had on my life. Through my work with Chicken Soup for the Soul and through Self-Esteem Seminars, I have been exposed to many self-improvement techniques and processes. This one stands head and shoulders above the rest for the ease of its use, its profound impact and the speed it produces results. The Sedona Method is a vastly accelerated way of letting go of feelings like anger, frustration, jealousy, anxiety, stress and fear as well as many other problems—even physical pain—with which almost everybody struggles at one time or another. One of the wonderful byproducts of taking the seminar is that I have become friends with Hale Dwoskin. He is one of the calmest, clearest, most joy-filled people I have ever met, living proof that the Sedona Method works wonders. I am ecstatic about our friendship. During the seminar, I found myself constantly in awe of Hale's brilliant teaching style. I experienced one breakthrough after another. As a result, I've already referred many family members, friends, and business associates to the Sedona Method seminars, and I've also had the entire staff at Chicken Soup for the Soul Enterprises learn the Method through the audio programs that Hale put together. Now I am thoroughly delighted to be able to recommend The Sedona Method:Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace, and Well-being. Reading this book is the equivalent of taking the Sedona Method Basic Course and several Advanced Courses rolled together. Filled with practical techniques and enlightening true stories, Hale clearly and generously explains everything we need to know to master the releasing process and to continue using the Method day by day, moment by moment in real life situations, such as having more fulfilling and harmonious relationships, building financial security, developing satisfying careers, breaking nasty habits, losing weight, and enjoying good health. He reveals the Sedona Method's powerful secret for manifesting what you want in your life, while showing you how to be at ease and comfortable with what you already have. The Method also enables you how to have greater ease, enjoyment and peace of mind with all that you experience on a daily basis. So I highly encourage you to read The Sedona Method with an open mind and heart. Please allow the simplicity of its message and the power of this process to open you to all the wonders that life has to offer. It is one of those rare things in today's world that delivers more than it promises... way more. I urge you to pay close attention to Hale's message in this book. If you do, it will change your life.

It's worth your time to examine the quality of the spelling in the positive reviews of this book in order to form an opinion of what marketers like to call "the target demographic." Ask yourself: do I fit into this group? Do I want to? If you want to read something with a lot of unapologetic masculinity lying around for you to slip in, by all means read Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" or "Choke." If you want to read something with a ton of sex, please treat yourself to Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom." If you want a good, old-fashioned story with great male and female characters and plenty of sex and violence, may I recommend George R. R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones?" Under no circumstances, however, should you read this book.

Radio and television host Glenn Beck has experienced the rollercoaster of life like few others. From the suicide of his mother when he was just thirteen, to his eventual alcoholism, depression, divorce, unemployment, and health scares—Glenn has weathered life's darkest storms.
Any one of those struggles could've ruined him, yet Glenn was able to keep moving forward. He saw past the darkness into the light; past his grief and addictions and into what his life could be.

You can do it too.

The process of finding happiness through personal redemption was not easy, but it left Glenn with a blueprint for how to confront future adversity. Glenn is living proof that these steps—he calls them "wonders"—don't just work on paper. They helped transform his life and can they can help to transform yours as well.

The 7 Wonders:

Glenn Beck and Dr. Keith Ablow—two of the most popular and influential personalities in American media today—have joined forces to present a powerful guide to personal transformation and fulfillment that is as unique as their own unlikely partnership. They are called the "7 Wonders" and they can be used by anyone who has made the decision that they are ready to change their life.

After the television talk show host and the bestselling psychiatrist struck up a fast friendship they realized that their experiences with life's struggles were complementary. What Keith had studied, Glenn had lived. What Keith had counseled patients on for years, Glenn had suffered through for decades.

The deeply personal insights they shared brought them to realize that their life stories had seven key principles in common; seven wonders that seemed to be essential ingredients for anyone attempting to transform their life.

Where does the courage to persevere come from when everything seems hopeless? Why is it nearly impossible to succeed without faith? How much do family and friendships matter in our journey? How do we break down our walls and reveal our inner truths? What does having compassion really mean? How do you tell real friends apart from those who are holding you back? If there's no one to blame for my past, what do you do with your anger and resentment?

These kinds of questions are the starting point toward fundamentally changing how you view past damaging relationships, toward breaking the debilitating grip of addiction and depression, toward injecting life with new meaning and purpose and toward helping you embark on a new journey based on hope, strength, and personal empowerment.

As you unwrap each of the seven wonders for yourself, you'll discover exactly what Glenn Beck found as he transformed his own life from darkness to light, from dead ends to endless possibilities, from addiction to freedom: it doesn't take a superhero to find the strength to change—it just takes the courage to take the first step.

This book, which was only possible by combining together decades of personal struggle with world-class professional experience, can be that first step for you.

The 7 Wonders grows out of a unique friendship that we've developed over the last five-years. It is unique because it brought together a psychiatrist who naturally burrows toward the truth, and a recovering addict who spent decades running from it.

As we spent more time together we began to let our guards down. Over time we reached a level of honesty with each other that is rare. As a result, we learned that the principles that have guided the well-honed healing techniques of one of us are precisely the same principles that instinctively guided the other to replace nearly unbearable pain with genuine happiness.

We believe that it was God's plan for us to meet; that it was God's plan for us to speak so openly with one another; and it was God's plan that we share with you the seven wonders we discovered together.

We also firmly believe that it was God's plan that this book now finds you at this exact moment in your life.

—Glenn Beck & Dr. Keith Ablow
