I've just finished reading Kirby Larson's The Fences Between Us and learned more about what our Japanese American citizens had to endure during WWII than I ever learned from a history class. We re-live this tragic era in our history through the eyes of teen Piper Davis, whose father, a pastor for a Japanese Baptist church, decides to follow his congregants when they're sent to an incarceraton camp, bringing Piper with him. Larson's incredible artistry and skill is on full display as she creates a world that immerses you in the period and creates characters you don't want to say goodbye to, at the same time grounding her story in primary source details. I highly recommend this book to both middle grade students and teachers for use in history/social studies curriculum. Nothing draws students into history more powerfully than a beautifully told story!

...a book that really "gets it". The answer to all of those b-school man-thrillers. This is the pioneering book that I've been seeking for over a decade-- that tells it like it really is for women trying to make an impact and yet maintain their sanity and femininity, too. Godiwalla's voice is clear, authentic and strong. And very necessary. A must-read on every business leader's bookshelf.

"Quite literally, I could not put this book down." --Manisha Thakor, Forbes"...told with alarming detail and considerable humility--it's a tale that will help the reader hone his or her ambition down to a finer, more human point."--Los Angeles Times"This book about choices and their consequences is a gripping read."--Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, bestselling author of The Mistress of Spices "heartwarming, heartbreaking, and hilarious in one great book. [Suits] is an absolute must-read."--Lois P. Frankel, author of Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office"Fresh, funny and utterly convincing. Nina Godiwalla has perfect pitch." --Sylvia Ann Hewlett, author of Top Talent No class can prepare anyone for a career on Wall Street. While others in Nina Godiwalla's Persian-Indian immigrant community were content to fulfill their parents'dreams, Nina's fierce ambition pulled her from Houston to New York to become a banker. The rarified taste of power left her hungry for more. Showered with Broadway tickets and ferried around in sleek black town cars, Morgan Stanley recruits led a fast and flashy lifestyle, but at a steep cost. In a world where strip clubs took the place of conference rooms, Nina was driven to fit the mold of her fellow recruits: wealthy, white, and male. But would she have to lose her Southern accent and suppress her family's heritage to prove her worth on the trading floor? Nina Godiwalla offers a behind-the-scenes look at the recklessness that ruled Wall Street during the dot-com boom days. But Suits is also a story of the family Nina left behind: a story of fathers and daughters, the pursuit of honor, swapping your grandmother's shrimp curry for takeout sushi and cocktails. A vibrant snapshot of an immigrant family with big dreams, Suits reveals how much we've been conditioned to trade for success.

American Son: A Novel Review

Beautifully written. I originally didn't want to read this book because it looked like a gang novel, but my girlfriend told me it was good. After I got into it I couldn't put it down. It is a really sad, at times painfully so, book. I really got caught up in the characters and the mistakes they would make. I am a Pilipino and found a lot here that resembled my own life growing up, like being ashamed of my own culture and feeling like Filipinos are invisible. The tragedy about these characters is that they suffer from a lack of pride. The mother is especially sad and endearing. This isn't the sort of Asian Ameican novel I've seen before, full of rice and orientalism for the NPR crowd. It's real and honest.

Strangers from a Different Shore: A History of Asian Americans, Updated and Revised Edition Review

Ronald Takaki did an excellent job in writing the Asian Americans experience from the first generation of immigrants to current issues that are affecting Asian Americans today. One of Takaki's aims in this book is to tell his readers the role of Asian-Americans in shaping the history of America. Many, he believes, held the view that being an American means being "white" which is far from the truth.
Takaki uses a variety of sources such as personal recollection, oral testimonies, newspapers, court cases, personal observations, among others. This makes his writings very credible indeed.
One of Takaki's aim is to bring a deeper understanding of Asian-Americans to his readers. Reading his book enables you to understand the Asian culture, their beliefs, ideas and why they become who they are today. Besides that, Takaki does not focus on only one ethnic group but several others that make up the so called "Asian American" minority group.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Asian Americans and the roles they played in shaping America today. It is important to learn about different ethnic group as the history of America is essentially a history of immigrants and it is important for us not to neglect this minority group which has made tremendous contributions to the nation and its society.
