This is the first in a series of Paranmormal adventure's aimed for young adults 12 years and up. I am not in the market range but I enjoyed this story very much before passing it along to my stepdaughter. I intend to read the other books in this series as well. This book tells the story of Daisy, a non-psychic child who lives with her mother (a psychic) and her sisters Rose and Poppy, who both have psychic abilites. Daisy feels like she doesn't quite fit in. With her family or at school. But suddenly Nighshade's cheerleaders are becoming very deathly ill..its almost like something is literally sucking the life from them. As a favor to her ex-best friend Samantha, Daisy joins the squad. From that vantage point, Daisy and her new boyfriend start to investigate the murder of a teenage girl who shows up walking and talking to the pep rally...It soon apparent that Nightshade has more than its fair share of odd beings. This story was quick and quirky and fun. It definetly caught and kept my attention and my step-daughter loved it. The writing is well done and the characters are well crafted. The paranormal jukebox is just one of many great touches. I think this book will captivate any teen or pre-teen and maybe their parents. I recomend this book as lighthearted, clean, paranormal fun.

Talion: Revenant Review

Talion: Revenant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the afterword to Talion: Revenant, author Michael Stackpole states that this novel initially went unpublished because, at 175,000 words, it was too long for an unknown author. Whoever said that must have not read the book, because the problem is that it is too SHORT, not too long! This is one of those titles that you just don't want to end, and that make you seriously depressed when you realize there is no sequel, even by another author.
The world that Stackpole has created in this stand-alone adventure is original, detailed, and has incredible potential. His characters, as always, are so real that you start wondering if you actually know them. This novel, like Once A Hero and I, Jedi is told from the first person perspective. This isn't an easy way to write a good novel, but Stackpole certainly makes it seem that way. The protagonist is Nolan, a Talion Justice with a tragic history that has some serious scores to settle. The story switches between his time training as a Talion and his missions as a Justice. At first this might be a bit confusing, but you will soon get accustomed to it, and it quickly becomes apparent that the author has turned this potentially unwieldy scheme into an elegant and pivotal element of his tale.
Some fantasy authors write works that are what I like to call 'borderline romance,' with an obvious love scheme that is typically invincible and an almost fairy-tale style of storytelling. Don't expect this from Stackpole. Talion: Revenant is traditional purebred fantasy, and it doesn't get much better than this. If you are even remotely interested in fantasy, or just a very deep, compelling story, then look no further. Summon your tsincaat and pick a good Imperial hawk- Talion: Revenant will certainly sweep you off your feet.

How to Kill a Rock Star Review

How to Kill a Rock Star

...and seeing as it is not 6:30 in the morning, have decided that it's better to just forgo sleep.
i don't know how to explain this book. i don't think that i'm ever going to be able to read the whole thing ever again.
it was joyous and gut-wrenching and euphoric and terrible. it sounds corny but i cried and laughed and for the latter half of the book felt like my heart was going to break.
never have i looked at the last page of any other book i've read before (and i didn't read the whole last page, just glanced at it to spot any key words/names) but i couldn't control myself with this book. it was so emotionally demanding to the point where i felt the anguish the characters were feeling that i had to have some sort of clue of how it would end, just so i could be the reader again and not one of the characters themselves.
the editor's review says that the writing is inelegant... if it was i didn't notice. the meaning behind the words is what grabbed me. it wasn't dickens but it never pretends to be and would have failed if it did.
amazing.
i'm not even tired.

Dead Girl Walking Review

Dead Girl Walking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Amber has never been known for her sense of direction, but her capacity for error jumps to new heights when, after a near death experience, her soul takes a wrong turn and she ends up in the body of popular girl Leah. Desperate to get back to her own body, Amber sets in motion a series of hilarious, horrifying, and touching events as she attempts to navigate life in Leah's body while trying to reclaim her own.
Dead Girl Walking is the first in a series, though it can easily be read as a stand-alone story. The body switching routine has been done before, and while it is done well this time, what really sets this book apart is Amber. Amber is the stereotypical quirky, klutzy, not-popular-but-not-unpopular girl. Despite filling these stereotypes (which really are starting to get a little worn), Amber is impossible not to love. Her wry commentary runs throughout the book, adding levity and thoughtfulness in all the right places. She's a person I can totally see myself befriending and laughing hysterically with every time we get together.
The secondary characters were equally endearing, though not as fleshed out as Amber. While we don't really get to meet Leah, we do take an intimate tour through her dark secrets, and they are frightening. Leah's situation is awful and I found myself feeling really sorry for her. After spending so much time in Leah's life, I wish the author had given the reader some closure or idea of how Leah's life is after the main events of the story have ended. This loose end and the abrupt ending are my only complaints about the story. Despite these two minor complaints, I fully enjoyed the book and recommend it. I will be checking out the sequels.

The Flipside of Feminism: What Conservative Women Know -- and Men Can't Say Review

The Flipside of Feminism: What Conservative Women Know -- and Men Can't Say
Average Reviews:

The Flipside of Feminism is a refreshing look at the realities of women's lives and the attempts of the feminist establishment to push women into a box that fits their delusions. Going from unveiling Betty Freidan's miserable marriage to the failed promises of a utopian world where men and family are marginal, this book explains, in plain language, why many women are unfulfilled trying to live the media ideal of what their life should be. It also offers a path back to a saner and balanced life that supports what women truly want - by a definition that Freud and Gloria Steinem would not continence. If you are a woman not planning to live with either of these two people, I would recommend this book. It is very instructive reading for men on what went wrong with relationships since the 1970s and what to look for and advocate in both women's and men's attitudes to repair the damage.

What if everything you've been told about women in America is wrong? What if what your college professors taught you - along with television, movies, books, magazine articles, and even news reports - have all been lies or distortions?

Since the 1960s, American feminists have set themselves up as the arbiters of all things female. Their policies have dominated the social and political landscape. The "spin sisters" in the media (aptly named by Myrna Blyth in her book of the same name) and their cohorts in academia are committed feminists. Consequently, everything Americans know -- or think they know -- about marriage, kids, sex, education, politics, gender roles, and work/family balance, has been filtered through a left-wing lens.

But what if conservative women are in the best position to empower American women?

Forty years have passed since the so-called women's movement claimed to liberate women from preconceived notions of what it means to be female -- and the results are in. The latest statistics from the National Bureau of Economic Research show that as women have gained more freedom, more education, and more power, they have become less happy.

Enough, say Suzanne Venker, an emerging young author, and veteran warrior Phyllis Schlafly. It's time to liberate America from feminism's dead-end road. Cast off the ideology that preaches faux empowerment and liberation from men and marriage. While modern women enjoy unprecedented freedom and opportunities, Venker and Schlafly argue that this progress is not the result of feminism.

Women's progress has been a natural evolution - due in large part to men's contributions. American men are not a patriarchal bunch, as feminists claim. They have, in fact, aided women's progress. And like women, they have been just as harmed by the feminist movement.

In The Flipside of Feminism, Venker and Schlafly provide readers with a new view of women in America -- one that runs counter to what Americans have been besieged with for decades. Their book demonstrates that conservative women are, in fact, the most liberated women in America and the folks to whom young people should be turning for advice. Their confident and rational approach to the battle of the sexes is precisely what America needs.

The authors advocate a common-sense approach to the issue of marriage and motherhood. Rather than belabor the tired notion of balance, they provide a step-by-step guide for how women can embrace their maternal desire, maintain strong marriages and also carve out a life of their own. The answer lies in a concept known as sequencing.

Tooth And Nail Review

Tooth And Nail
Average Reviews:

I am a fan of both the military fiction and zombie tale genres and DiLouie's Tooth and Nail delivers both in spades.
Here's what is so cool about this novel:
1. Very realistic -- this may be about zombies, but it's not some supernatural gore-dripper -- it's about soldiers and a very scary what-if...
2. Non-stop action -- this book will never make Oprah's Book of the Month club, but I would like to name a roller coaster after it -- from the get-go, the action and tension are unrelenting and the doggone book feels glued to your hands. (NOTE: Thanks, Mr. DiLouie -- on my first reading, I finally finished your book at 4 am with sweaty palms and had trouble getting to work on time the next day -- on the second reading, I still couldn't take my time and finished it again in one marathon Saturday reading session.)
3. Better & better -- I've read some of DiLouie's past work and this is by far his best work -- the writing is tight, descriptive without being florid & puffy, and believable -- again, not a book that will draw people together on a Tuesday evening for white wine and canapes, but a kick-ass story that is well-written and doesn't stop til you get back in the station and the lap-bars retract as you put the book down for the final time.
Rock on, DiLouie -- hope you've got more in the pipeline!

Closer to the Light Review

Closer to the Light
Average Reviews:

Not to repeat what several others have mentioned here in these well written reviews, but this is a wonderful book.
The most notable element I see in this book is that children do not pass ALONE. There is always a loving presence - someone that goes with the child - and takes away their fears and eases the transition.
There was one story about a young girl (age 7) who tried to kill herself. She'd been the victim of horrible child abuse and chose suicide as the only way out. She left her body and found herself surrounded by "a bubble of love and life". She was shown a tree - encased in ice and snow - and told she was in the winter of her life now, but that summer was coming and much joy was ahead of her in life.
She was 47 when interviewed for this book and her adult life had been one of stability, joy and much peace.
The other good reason to buy this book is because on page 147 is "the rest of the story" about the 1986 bombing of the elementary school in Cokeville, Wyoming.
Many of the children who were there when the bomb went off (they'd all been stuffed into one classroom by David Young, the bomber) told of angelic beings that gave them very specific instructions as to where to go to be safe.
Not one or two, but many children talked about the angels, or "nice ladies who were all lit up" and voices - all giving them clear direction.
And by the way, only David Young died when that bomb went off.
This is a well written, informative, enlightening and good-news book.

The skeptics have had their say; now listen to the experts. In hundreds of interviews with children who had once been declared clinically dead, Dr. Morse found that children too young to have absorbed our adult views and ideas of death, share first-hand accounts of out-of-body travel, telepathic communication and encounters with dead friends and relatives. Finally illuminating what it is like to die, here is proof that there is that elusive "something" that survives "bodily death.""New information on what may await us after death...Responsible, highly readable, and certainly thought-provoking."THE KIRKUS REVIEWS
