Mars Needs Moms Review

Breathed's art typically makes one, well, breathless. Here, with Mars Needs Moms, one becomes weightless with wonder at his drawing abilities. He's in as good of form as ever -- or better -- with this wonderful mix of humans and extra-extra terrestrials. While the art and story are literally out this world, the storyline is very earth-bound: families are so easily taken for granted, but nothing matters more in this or any other world. Breathed suggests it take a Martian's eye-view to keep us properly grounded. Nice to think about, but the real treat here is for the eyes. My son and I still periodically go back to Fudwapper and Wish for Wings that work; this surely is another opus for Breathed.

I just borrowed this from the Library today and my 2 and 4 year old sons loved it! My 4 year old had me read it to him several times and he was cracking up through the whole book. We'll definitely be purchasing a copy for ourselves!

When just a single pea touches the lips of this determined vegetable hater, an enormous battle of war and peas begins. But our hero doesn't just cry, whine, or refuse to swallow. He turns into a VEGGIE MONSTER! That is until—gulp!—he accidentally swallows the pea, and realizes that maybe vegetables aren't so bad after all. At least until broccoli night comes around. With inventive mixed-media illustrations and a short, snappy text that combines a child's dinner-time drama with a hilarious parents'-eye-view, George McClements has created a wry and funny story that just might inspire a few veggie monsters out there to give peas a chance.

Rain Makes Applesauce Review

Oh JOY! Indeed what an absolute joy to type in the title 'Rain Makes Applesauce', and find out that this glorious book is in print again!
I've read every other Amazon Customer Review of this book, & I agree with every single person: this is a Must-Have book for children AND adults. I have not seen it since my 4 years in college where I spent 4 years purchasing copies & either giving them as presents to my friends, or simply never getting them back when loaned. Hence when other reviewers right here tell you such things as 'my children had to take it out every other week from the library for YEARS because they adored it so much' - & that another actually went on to become an artist because of 'Rain' - & that Christmas simply STOPPED for yet another family while 2 excited daughters, now adult, put everything else aside until they'd re-read 'Rain' from end to end: BELIEVE THEM!
'Rain Makes Applesauce' is an infinitely memorable book with exquisite illustrations. It speaks to all whose hearts are young. Here is that rare, one-in-a million book suffused with an ineffable joy & replete with that exquisite silliness found only in the observations of those gifted with Innocence no matter what their chronological age. Children fall in love with this book the moment it begins. Adults do, too. Even if you don't have children: buy it for yourself. Or find a family to give it to, for the that singular pleasure found only in hearing the unstudied laughter of children welling up unstoppably and spilling out like - Yes! - like the most delicious of rains.

Dancing in the Wings Review

Dancing in the Wings

I'm a fifth grade elementary school teacher and work in a black neighborhood. Recently our theme for the week was the biography of the famous ballet star, Evelyn Cisneros.Unfortunately, our school library did not have any information on Cisneros at the time. Instead, our media specialist read this wonderful book by Debbie Allen of "FAME" fame. Well, let me tell you, my students never laughed so hard during a book. They just simply loved it.
Put-downs are a fact of life, especially (and unfortunately) in elementary school. I think the students really got the message loud and clear and in a fun and interesting, not preachy, way. As a class, we discussed how people are different and we need to accept others without making fun of them. It was also clear that we sound horrible when we tease and taunt each other, too. There were really great points of discussion above and beyond ballet and dancing.
Debbie Allen is truly talented and not just as a dancer! My students learned about the world of ballet, which was new to them. They were engaged while being read to and afterwards enjoyed talking and laughing about this book. I found it to be a tremendous teaching tool in that it opened up many topics of discussion that week and students connected to this book in an exciting way. It spoke to them in their own language and that's a difficult thing to do! My students can be hard to reach through books and yet Debbie Allen accomplished it with ease.
The pictures were a delight, very expressive. I will buy this book now and use it in my classroom every year. I strongly recommend this book as a teaching tool, in all neighborhoods. I hope Allen writes more for children soon.

My son loves this book. The pictures are similar to the show and he recognizes characters quickly and has started making up his own stories with his choo-choos.
